EcoBuild has many different resources such as testbeds, which can be used for members but also customers outside of our network.

Testbeds

Impregnation and chemical modification of bio-based materials

Placement: Borås, Stockholm

Established: 2006

Description:

The testbed consists of two facilities:
• A pilot plant for modification of wood and wood fibres such as acetylation and furfurylation. The facility is also used for conventional pressure impregnation and microwave drying. It is an autoclave equipped with both mantle heating and microwave heating with a length of about 2.0 m and a diameter of 0.6 m.
• A pilot plant for pressure impregnation of wood. The autoclave is 2.0 m long and o.44 m in diameter. The volume is just over ½ cubic meter. Impregnation is carried out usually in pods (0.25 x 0.30 x 0.50-2.0 m)

Status: Unique equipment for chemical modification of bio-based materials which can also be used for traditional wood preservation. Mainly used for treatment of wood for outdoor applications.

Main customer groups:

Utilized by both large and small companies in the wood preservation industry and the wood industry. Also used in international collaboration with other institutes and universities.

Testbed for development of wood based composites and board materials

Placement: Stockholm/Borås

Established: 2010

Description:

The testbed, ranging from the processing of raw materials to fully developed materials and product concepts, consists of:
• Mills for the manufacture of chips/particles/fibers from wood.
• Equipment for gluing and modification of
fiber/wood/biomass feedstock.
• Shaping and hot pressing of boards.
• Equipment for evaluation of curing development of glue/bonding.
• UV laser for sample preparation and microscope (light and SEM) characterization of the microstructure.

Materials are evaluated according to standardized methods for mechanical and long-term properties, as well as specially
developed methods to evaluate and understand interactions between materials.

Status: Internationally unique as it covers the entire value chain from raw materials to fully developed product concepts.

Wood industry, Pulp & paper industry, adhesive industry, building component industry.

Wood in outdoor environment: Service life prediction of bio-based materials

Placement: Borås, Stockholm, Kristineberg

Established: 1996

Description:

The testbed consists of:
• 3 different test fields for outdoors test
• 1 maritime station (Fiskebäckskil)
• 2 laboratories (Stockholm and in Borås)

The testbed provides evaluation of eg:
• Resistance to rotting fungi
• Staining and mold growth
• Marine pests
• Dimensional stability
• Surface properties
• Artificial aging

The testbed is also subject to laboratory activities where different material properties can be studied in detail by accelerating the
ageing and decomposition processes.

Status: Internationally recognized Nordic test field for durability evaluation of wood-based materials and finishes primarily for
outdoor use.

companies in the wood preservation industry and the wood industry. Also used in international collaboration with other
institutes and universities.
